Natrum Muriaticum - I don’t want to be hurt or to hurt you

Homeopathy for Grief - Remedy Natrum Muriaticum

The ocean of life

Many of us resonate with this homeopathic remedy - Natrum Muriaticum (commonly known as Nat Mur / Natrum Mur) which is made from sea salt. We instinctively get our dose of it by being near the sea, views of the sea, swimming in the sea, holidaying by the sea, boating, kayaking, picnicking…..you name it we want to dose up on our Vitamin Sea.

The sea is the water of life in so many ways - no we can’t drink it, so it doesn’t sustain us in that way, yet there is a deeper emotional nourishment it brings us. It connects us as humans, it connects countries & continents across oceans, it is the vast blue seen from space and can elicit the ‘blues’ from a Homeopathic perspective.

Symbolising our time of being in the watery womb of our physical beginnings, the remedy made from Natrum Muriaticum certainly speaks clearly to the emotional element of our being - the watery emotions.

Natrum Muriaticum and sensitivity

Natrum Muriaticum - homeopathic remedy made from sea salt

As with any of our Homeopathic remedies we can use them for acute ailments (normally a sudden onset and lasting a short amount of time) or for chronic issues (a condition that has been around for a long time and doesn’t normally resolve).

When working constitutionally, we are looking at resolving deeper more chronic issues and this is where we see the remedies come into the light as having more of a personality profile.

Natrum Mur (as it is often shortened to in Homeopathy) is a sensitive person. Their biggest challenge they hold within themselves is not to hurt and not to be hurt. This is a constant battle they have within themselves. This behaviour is often unconsiouss as is the wall that they invariably end up putting around themselves to stop from being hurt.

Nat Mur individuals can be very giving to others, very empathetic towards other people or animals and can give and give in order not to ever have to expose themselves or their own vulnerabilities. They are sympathetic individuals and make great healers, counsellors & therapists, They are very loyal friends who will always be there for others to lend a listening ear. Some of my best friends have strong Natrum Muriaticum qualities.

They can often be so sensitive that even the slightest comment or gesture that implies rejection or ridicule will find them withdrawing into their shell and finding solace in their own company. Over time these imagined or real hurts will cause the Natrum Muriaticum individual to become very cautious and they may never enter into an intimate relationship again - preferring to keep their own company.

Grief & loss

Sea Salt - natural homeopathic remedy for grief & sensitivity - Natrum Muriaticum

Often in the past they have had some form of grief and from this grief they have never recovered. It sits deep within and to protect themselves from ever being that vulnerable again or experiencing that kind of hurt again, they will build a wall around themselves. So what does this wall look like? It looks like this…..they will snap at you if you ask too many questions, or get too close, they will want to be seen and understood deeply, but won’t let anyone in close enough to ever understand them, they often feel misunderstood, they have a long standing grief that they have never recovered from and will keep this inside - never sharing their true feelings with anyone. Not even their closest friend, their partner or their parent. For in doing so they risk getting hurt…..again…..and they haven’t recovered from the last hurt, so they instinctively hold back.

They may fall in love with the wrong person and never get over it - holding onto the love for many years to come, they may have lost someone close to them and the grief is profound and deep.

Sensitive to rejection, ridicule, humiliation & grief

Homeopathic remedy Natrum Muriaticum - introverted - likes reading

Sensitive to rejection, ridicule, humiliation or grief they find solace in things like reading, staying at home, being beside the seaside, listening to music, loving pets and animals (and trusting them too) more than people. They will prefer to solve their own problems rather than trusting others.

All of these behaviours further add salt to the Natrum Muriaticum’s wound of being deeply hurt. They feel that others are not there for them, they can’t be trusted, people will just hurt them. They have a conflict inside, because even though they would dearly love to be understood as they understand others, at the same time they won’t let people get close enough for this to even happen, so great is their fear of being hurt. So they hurt anyway, the salt is rubbed into the wound anyway and the watery emotions are held in - just like the salt absorbs the water.

Consolation & Being Alone

Natrum Muriaticum and being alone - consolation aggravates

Consolation is unbearable to them, so oftentimes in children you will see they go to their room, slam the door and cry on their own. If you try to console them it just makes it worse, they will continue with their crying all the while feeling that no one understands them. In older people they will not show their emotions easily and can come across quite serious. The adult Natrum Muriaticum’s will often seek out movies with sad stories so that they can cry and release the built up emotions inside.

It may seem that they are impenetrable in some ways, but the truth is that they develop deep emotional & sentimental attachments to people, but they won’t show it. To show it may risk getting hurt again. So they keep it in, they shut it in and no one but themselves will know about it.

Left for too long without their dose of Sea Salt in Homeopathic form, Natrum Muriaticum people can often become depressed. They are inconsolable and may become suicidal. This is the sensitive teenager that locks themselves in their room after a break up with a loved one and who feels they can’t live again without their beloved. They keep their grief inside, become very isolated and wallow in the feelings of grief - not allowing any consolation or kindness to be recieved. Listening to sad music is a way they try to get their Homeopathic dose - like with like - the sadness of the music somehow helping them to express and process all of the pain.

Beautiful smiles

Ignatia Homeopathic Remedy and feeling romantic

One of the most striking things I’ve observed in my practice with people needing the Homeopathic remedy Natrum Mur is their smile. They will be all serious and quite hard to elicit information from, but when they smile….oh wow what a smile. It lights up their whole face and you can’t help but think to yourself that they are doing the world an injustice to not share this smile.

The other noticeable feature I have found is that after you’ve asked a few questions and they’ve shared something quite personal, when you ask another question you’ll get the answer ‘Haven’t I already told you enough’. Often the answer will be in a very stern tone and you really get the message ‘Back off!’. This is really curious to me as you know that they are a sensitive person and don’t want to hurt or upset you…,but you’ve gotten too close, you’ve stepped beyond that wall and that makes them feel vulnerable once again - and that’s a no go with a Nature Muriaticum constitution.

Natrum Muriaticum - Restoring Connectedness

Overcoming sensitivity and loss - connecting with others

After the remedy the pain and suffering of the loss, the rejection, the sensitivity recedes and once again life has the colour and meaning it should. The memory will still be there but the walls of defence and solitude start to dissolve and the person allows others in. Friendships may be restored, new relationships may be made and the grief and sensitives are more integrated - allowing there to be so much more connection with others. The results are quite astounding and it is what makes practicing Homeopathy SO rewarding
